It's a new year. I don't know if you're someone who's ready to pull your hair out at one more mention of productivity, "new year, new you," resolutions, and SMART goals or if you clicked to this post because like Leslie Knope your hobbies list includes "jammin' on my planner." Though I myself am one of those dorky planner and goals loving gals, I do have a yearly tradition that is a much gentler approach to a New Year Resolution of sorts. As the calendar turns, I make it a yearly tradition to thoughtfully and intentionally select a singular … [Read more...]
Worst to Best Mental Health Fiction Books I Read This Year
To be better prepared for this year's #GeekDis, a month long discussion on disability representation in pop culture and media, I tried to find and read some fiction books with characters who had depression, anxiety, adhd, or some other kind of experience I could personally relate to. Since everyone has different experiences, it's hard to make general statements about how good a book like this is, so in this post I will rank these books based on my personal level of relatability, how well they handled difficult topics in general, and how much I … [Read more...]
Lessons from Star Wars: Attack of the Clones
Each Star Wars Day I am covering a lesson from one of the Star Wars movies or shows. In this post we will discuss what Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones can teach us about healthy and unhealthy attachment. If you'd prefer to watch the video version of this post, click here to watch it on YouTube Attachment theory is a psychological concept that explains how we form emotional bonds with others. Let's give a quick summary of the Attachment Styles: An adult with a "Secure Attachment Style" has a generally positive view of self … [Read more...]
My One Word for 2023
You may have heard someone talk about choosing their "One Word," "setting an intention", or something of that nature at this time of year. For me, it has become a yearly tradition to choose one word or phrase to be my primary focus for the new year. After reflecting on my past year and where I want to go in the future, I usually pick a word to sum up my top priority goals for the new year or a concept that I want to remind myself of regularly. If you'd like to learn more about what a One Word Focus is and how to choose your own, click here, … [Read more...]
Am I Fine at 29?
"Fine." What an odd word. We use it to note excellent quality (fine china or a fine job), for something very thin or small (fine thread or fine print), the amount you pay for a punishment (paying a fine for speeding), or this little lie we all say as an automatic response to the question, "how are you?" By definition it means "all right, well, or healthy"...but are we? Is ALL right? For an overthinker like me who hates to lie, even with a culturally accepted and sometimes preferred dishonest response of "fine," I often get a little anxiety … [Read more...]
How I Blogged for 7 Years with Depression
On September 9th, 2022 I celebrated 7 years since I launched my first blog! If you'd like to learn some fun history of my blog through the years (including my cringey first graphics!), check out this post. As a part of "GeekDis", a conversation on disability representation in pop culture hosted each September by Heather of JustGeekingBy, and because I didn't have many examples of bloggers with depression when I first started, I want to share some of my journey and what I learned along the way in case it helps and encourages another creator out … [Read more...]
Lessons from Star Wars: The Phantom Menace
Happy Star Wars Day! I love talking about the life lessons we can learn from our favorite geeky movies and shows, so I've decided I will go through 1 Star Wars movie or show each Star Wars Day until we've covered them all! This post is on lessons from Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, focusing on a quote from Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi that highlights the importance of balancing mindfulness of the future and the present moment. If you'd prefer to watch the video version of this post, click here to watch it on YouTube I just … [Read more...]
My 2022 Focus
I have a yearly tradition of choosing a One Word (or phrase) Focus to give me a main theme and intention for my year. It's often related to a major area of personal development that a lot of my goals fall under or something I want to remind myself of more that year. If you'd like to learn more about what a One Word Focus is and how to choose your own, click here. In this blog post I will review my 2021 focus and then reveal what I've chosen for my 2022 focus. If you'd prefer to watch the video version of this post, click here to watch it on … [Read more...]

How Disability Representation Affects Our Self Talk & Goals
This September 2021 the wonderful Heather of Just Geeking By has been hosting a month long discussion on disability representation in pop culture called GeekDis (learn more about it here). So far I've gotten to be a part of an interview on her website and contribute to a post on Allison Alexander's site on How Disabled People React to Seeing Their Conditions Represented on TV. I'm currently working on a blog post about my experience and lessons of blogging for 6 years with depression, so make sure to subscribe to my email list so you don't miss … [Read more...]
